No Way Out
There is news that No Way Out is going to be centered around cage matches. This is really starting to annoy me. I am not a big fan of the gimmick pay per views. There is one simple reason why I do not like each pay per view having their own gimmick...
To better understand why I do not like the gimmick PPVs let's go back and look at Triple H vs. The Undertaker from Wrestlemania 28. This is a match where a gimmick was used to further along a storyline. Triple H vs. Undertaker was already done at Wrestlemania 27 and Wrestlemania 17. In order to make this match not feel like a remake of an old match they added the Hell in the Cell stipulation. That is how a gimmick should be used. To further along a feud. I feel like now when we are getting close to the Hell in the Cell Pay Per View it almost seems like, "Hey, let's have our match in a cell because we have to."
From 1997 to 2008 there were a total of 16 Hell in a Cell matches. From 2009 to the present there were 9 Hell in a cell matches. That is over half as many in three years than there was in eleven years. Out of those 9 matches, there were only two that were not at the Hell in a Cell Pay Per View. One was a RAW dark match so it wasn't even televised and the other was the Triple H vs. Undertaker match from Wrestlemania 28.
Even more ridiculous is the Elimination Chamber Pay Per View. There have been a total of 15 elimination chamber matches. A total of 5 of them have happened before they started becoming an annual event at the No Way Out PPV in February. It was eventually just named Elimination Chamber. Since 2008, the February PPV has had two elimination chambers on the card. I believe that this is a little overkill.
Gimmick matches do not have the same meaning if they become annual events. It used to be special if we got a chance to see a Hell in the Cell, TLC, or Elimination Chamber match. Now, we know we can expect these matches to happen every year. I was excited when they announced Undertaker vs. Triple H happening in Hell in a Cell. When October comes around and they announce the WWE Championship match in a Hell in a Cell I will not be nearly as excited
So, that is what I think about gimmick PPVs. Leave a comment and tell me what you think.
